  • Whitewater 60x120x10 2017. Installation.
  • Whitewater 60x120x10 2017 The Rio Grande, which provides a lifeline through the Southwest high desert where I live, was the starting point for this work. Rafting through the spring rapids is a popular sport, and I wanted to convey the movement of the cool water through the rocks. The individual panels of heat cut, painted sheers are individually mounted so that the shifting layers can be viewed, and the perforations create changing shadows on the walls behind.
  • Wing 77x77 2016 The silvery microscopic scales on a moth’s wing were the inspiration for this work. Dozens of pieces were created by fusing two types of non woven materials. They were stitched individually to a sheer backing, then two additional layers with differing perforations were installed behind. Each scale is attached only at the top, and the backing layers are also free floating, so the work responds to the slightest breeze and looks different depending on the light source and time of day.
  • Wing detail.
  • The Pool 40x43x2 2018 Multiple layers of heat cut, hand painted translucent material were stretched over a shadow box frame to create the illusion of depth in this piece inspired by the many hot springs found in our national parks.
  • The Pool. Detail.
  • Regeneration 66x16x16 2104 Dark brown silk dupioni was stitched and then stretched over an armature to create the vaselike structure of this sculpture. A freestanding web of stitched elastic bands covers the top of the shape, and extends off into the air.
  • Regeneration. Detail.
  • Primordial Soup 58x39, 2018 Free flowing layers of sheer nylon are variously painted and perforated to give the impression of emerging life. Elaborate shapes were cut from transparent materials and fused to both the top and bottom layers.
  • Multicellular 67x50, 2014 Inspired by the differing cell structures in organic tissue, Multicellular features a layered, stitched and backed textile that is cut open to install a transparent panel. The centerpiece is textured with stitched circular bands, and further detailed with heat cut perforations.
  • Let Your Light Shine 44x67, 2018 Created specifically for the invitational exhibition Things That Matter, this work is dedicated to the young people who are facing the challenges of making their way in the world today. It’s my hope that they will be able to find fulfilling careers that enable them to express themselves and make a positive impact on those around them.
  • Let There Be Light 60x60, 2017 full and detail photos by Mark Hollingsworth In our current dark political climate, I wanted to offer an antidote to despair. 300 LED lights are arranged inside this piece, which is covered by overlapping circles of handpainted sheer materials.
  • Let there be light. Detail.
  • Harvest 72x31x8, 2018 Harvest includes painted and stitched cotton treated with wax resist. It is stretched over a frame, and lighted branches are installed within.
  • Entropy 60x40, 2018 Machine cut, artist painted translucent materials are fused together in this work featuring shaped edges.
