Fibre Tibet is a gorgeous, tactile collection of knitwear, woven shawls, blankets, scarves and sweaters featuring the finest organic Tibetan cashmere and ultra soft yak wool. In addition to its impressive softness and visual appeal, Fibre Tibet generates positive social, environmental and economic impact for Tibetan nomads living on the high-altitude plateau surrounding Mount Kailash, a peak believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be the center of the Universe.
The company springs from the commitment to progress in Tibet held by Monica Garry, founder and CEO of The Bridge Fund of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, who has been working with Tibetan nomad communities since 1996. Garry has helped mobilize over $30 million to support education, healthcare, cultural heritage preservation and environmental conservation on the Tibetan plateau. When Garry sent a box of yak wool textiles, yarn and wool samples from Tibet to Alberto Zanone, a leading textile designer in Milan, Italy, Zanone and his wife, Carla La Sorte, mobilized, with The Bridge Fund, to work with nomads to improve the quality of fiber and develop a company whose product could compete in the global marketplace, and earn significant income for the nomads at the heart of the venture.
The results of their efforts resulted in a wool combing and collection program for nomads to improve the quality of fiber and gain a higher market price. Comments Connor Twyman of Fibre Tibet: “We needed to ensure that the wool was not only being collected but also processed and sold by Tibetan nomad communities, so that they could capture all the value possible on the way to the final customer, and that our project was really sustainable and directly benefitting Tibetan nomads. We know the nomad families supported by Fibre Tibet and we’re committed to working with them to help them grow their business and improve their incomes.”
The quality of the product is immediately obvious at the first touch. Fibre Tibet has been sold finest stores and boutiques in the US, Europe and Japan, including Barneys New York, Maxfields in LA, Louis of Boston, Kaneman and Beams in Tokyo and Square One in London and Luisa in Florence.
